Publication Charges
To provide open access for journals and books, we at AP use a business model in which expenses of Editorial Board review, journals and books production process, book prints and shipping, and online hosting with other fees, are recovered in part by charging a publication fee to the authors for each article they publish. For AP journals the publication fee per article is US$ 1,000 (we currently offer a 75% discount to all invitees). For AP books the publication fee per article is US$ 800 (we currently offer a 50% discount to all invitees). There is no charge for publishing Editor's articles, therefore we encourage Authors to reconsider the possibility to become Editors.
To produce reviewed, edited and formatted journal and/or book, costs a significant amount of money. To finalize, host and maintain Open Access brings additional costs but for authors that means their papers will have maximum impact, greater flexibility and visibility. The OA increases paper citation and helps authors in their career. Publishing the conclusions is the final step in the research process and when calculating the real cost of an article by dividing the annual budget of your institution and the number of articles they publish, one can easily see that the final fee of publishing the article is a very, very small fraction.
But in addition, Academy Publish authors and users also benefit from:
- AP journals and books being covered in many media
- Author copyright retention- authors retian their copyright and the right to be cited as the originators of their work
- AP website provides frequent newsletters and does media adds, increasing the visibility of your research and articles
As we said before, publication fees are a small fraction of the costs of doing research, and it makes sense for funding agencies to include these fees in research grants. Many have recognized that publishing is an unavoidable part of the research process and since OA has a much wider audience than traditional books and journals who also charge fees, we beleive this unrestricted access makes a huge difference for a fee that reflects the costs associated with publishing process, administration, web hosting, editing, web design and printing and shipping.
The challenge for any OA organization is to ensure that our income covers our costs, and that we maintain our financial independence.
